Green Huntsman Spider

Green Huntsman Spider: Characteristics, Identification, and Prevention

The Green Huntsman Spider belongs to the family Sparassidae, characterized by the very same speed, big size, and impressive hunting talents. The green color of the spider is a perfect mirror for the leaf’s shade. This spider is a common inhabitant of forests, grasslands, and gardens in Europe, Asia, and certain parts of Australia. It does not spin webs like other spiders. It stalks its prey quietly and then strikes in a flash. In a study published in 2023, titled “Revision of the genus Micrommata”, researchers Peter Jäger and his team reviewed this species, pointed out its distinctive traits and affirmed its placement in the Sparassidae family. This scientific work gives more credit to the spider’s peculiarities and hunting actions.

Characteristic Description
Scientific Name Micrommata virescens (most common species)
Common Name Green Huntsman Spider
Size Adult body length ranges from 8–15 mm; females are slightly larger and more robust than males.
Color & Appearance Bright leaf-green body that provides strong camouflage in vegetation; slender, smooth body with minimal patterning.
Legs Long, thin, and agile legs adapted for fast movements through foliage rather than ground hunting.
Eyes Eight eyes arranged in two horizontal rows; provides good motion detection but not as strong as wolf spiders.
Habitat Common in bushes, tall grass, gardens, forests, and shrubs; rarely enters homes and prefers dense greenery.
Behavior Diurnal and active during the day; relies on stealth and camouflage to ambush prey among leaves.
Diet Feeds on small insects such as flies, moths, grasshoppers, and beetles; occasionally targets small pollinators.
Venom Mild venom used to subdue prey; harmless to humans and typically causes only slight redness or irritation.
Reproduction Females guard their egg sacs within foliage; spiderlings disperse soon after hatching and live independently.
Lifespan Usually lives 1–2 years in the wild; females often survive longer due to lower predation risk.
Geographic Range Found throughout Europe, parts of Asia, and temperate regions with abundant vegetation.
Adaptations Excellent camouflage, quick reflexes, and strong climbing ability; thrives in leafy, humid environments.
Predators Birds, lizards, predatory insects, and larger spiders.
Activity Time Primarily active during the daytime, especially in sunny areas of vegetation.
Prevention Tips Trim shrubs and tall grass around the home.
Seal window gaps to prevent accidental entry.
Reduce outdoor lighting that attracts insects.
Keep vegetation from touching exterior walls.
How to Get Rid of Them Gently remove spiders found indoors and release outside.
Use natural repellents such as eucalyptus or citrus sprays.
Clean vegetation-heavy areas regularly.
Contact professional pest control if sightings become frequent.

What are the Key Characteristics of Green Huntsman Spiders?

Here are the five key characteristics of Green Huntsman Spiders:

  1. Hunting Style: The Green Huntsman Spider hunts down its prey and traps it using its speed. It does not construct a web for catching food. This uses quick movement and its ability to camouflage itself rather than hunting for meals. This pursuit technique defines its hunting behavior.
  2. Diet: The main prey of these spiders are insects, grasshoppers and small cockroaches. Their diet also includes other small arthropods. They defeat prey much bigger than themselves due to nigger size. The venom quickly paralyzes their chosen prey items, rendering them helpless.
  3. Web Use: Green Huntsman Spiders do not create ordinary webs to catch prey. They use small amounts of silk primarily for two purposes. The female produces silk to weave a thin, flat egg sac that she guards. They also use a protective line as a safety strap when moving.
  4. Defense Mechanisms: The first line of defense is its brilliant green color which achieves good blending in the foliage. The spider often chooses to flee quickly rather than fight back when threatened.
  5. Lifespan: Green Huntsman Spiders live for about one to two years in the wild. Females generally live longer than males, particularly those that guard egg sacs. The way these colourful creatures live depends greatly on the available food and the temperature and humidity conditions.

Where Do Green Huntsman Spiders Live?

Here are the details on the Green Huntsman Spider’s habitat:

  1. Habitats: Green Huntsman Spiders live in areas with green vegetation. This includes forest edges, clearings, and dry meadows. They can often be found sitting on the lower branches of many trees as well as tall grasses and tussocks of sedges. The green color of the spider helps it camouflage in such locations.
  2. Resting Spots: These daytime spiders lurk in the foliage in wait for unsuspecting prey. Females use silk to stitch leaves into a nest or retreat. They protect their egg sac in this leafy structure for security.
  3. Geographic Range: The Micrommata virescens spider has a distribution in the Palearctic. It can be found throughout northern and central Europe, and parts of southern Britain. There are other similar green species from the Mediterranean Basin, North Africa and parts of Asia.
  4. Preferred Conditions: These spiders flourish in sunny, warm, well-humid settings. Hunting and camouflage are preferred in densely vegetated areas of low cover. This allows them to pursue plants effectively during the abundant vegetation during their active daytime.

How Can You Identify a Green Huntsman Spider?

Here are five key characteristics to identify the Green Huntsman Spider:

  1. Size: Adult green huntsman spiders exhibit noticeable sexual size differences. Females reach a body length of 12 to 16 millimeters (mm). Males are smaller with a body length ranging from 7 to 10 mm.  These dimensions refer to the body only, not the leg span.
  2. Coloration: The biggest colour-changing feature actually distinguishes the sexes. Females are bright green in color on the carapace and legs, and lighter green on the abdomen with a darker green median stripe.  The carapace and legs of males are green-olive in color while the abdomen is striped with yellow and scarlet or red. Juveniles are initially yellow-brown before turning green.
  3. Body Structure: The body structure of Green Huntsman Spiders is less flattened compared to that of many other Huntsman species.  They have eight small black eyes arranged in two horizontal rows of 4. Around each of a Western Bluebird’s eyes is a ring of small white hairs.
  4. Legs: The Huntsman family (Sparassidae) has characteristic long legs. Due to twisting, the legs spread out sideways like a crab, which is called laterigrade legs. Their structure helps them achieve great speed and also makes them look crab-like.
  5. Behavioral Traits: The spiders are diurnal (active during the day) and they are active hunters; they do not spin web traps. They use a stalk-and-pounce technique, waiting for vegetation for an insect to pass that they can run and jump on to catch.

How Can You Prevent Green Huntsman Spiders Around Your Home?

Here are five ways to prevent Green Huntsman Spiders around your house:

  1. Seal Entry Points: Examine the outside of the house and seal all cracks. Close off gaps around windows, doors, and utility lines with caulk or weather stripping. It prevents spiders from having easy entry into the building.
  2. Reduce Vegetation Near Walls: Make sure to cut back all bushes, shrubs, and trees that touch the exterior walls of your home. Green Huntsman Spiders camouflage themselves among all the greenery. Creating a gap eliminates a direct bridge to your house.
  3. Outdoor Lighting: For outdoor lighting, opt for yellow or sodium vapor lights rather than white lights. White lights cause the attraction of insects that spiders feed on. The less possible meals there are, the less likely spiders are to stick around.
  4. Maintain Clean Spaces: Keep your garages, sheds and outside storage area free of junk and debris. Piles of wood, rocks and equipment offer a great hiding place. Taking away these resting spots discourages spiders.
  5. Pest Control: It controls the population of common household pests such as cockroaches and moths. Green Huntsman Spiders follow their prey. When their main sources of food are eliminated, the spiders migrate to more fruitful hunting grounds.

Are Green Huntsman Spiders Dangerous?

Green Huntsman Spiders are not harmful to humans at all. This venom does not harm humans. These spiders stay shy and avoid people. They do not act aggressively. They’ll bite to defend themselves if they’re manhandled. Bites from Green Huntsman Spiders happen rarely. A bite usually causes only minimal irritation or redness on the skin of the victim. There is no serious medical danger from their bites. Generally, these spiders do not bite humans and avoid contact with them.
